Top 12 Baby Boomer Blogs | The Dirty Dozen

Written by glenn

Topics: Baby Boomer

In 1967 The Movie Dirty Dozen was released.  Baby Boomers aged from 3 years old to the ripe old age then of 21. I myself was right at that mid-point – about to become a teenager – a feisty 12 year old.  I remember the movie well – seeing it with my Mom and Dad and two older brothers!  In those days PG-13 actually meant something. Since I was older looking – LOL Mom and Dad did take me now and then to those PG-13 movies with the understanding it might be a “duck and cover” movie. Meaning duck and cover your eyes if mom told me to!

I think it is appropriate to label the top 12 Baby Boomer Blogs with a fun label of  The Dirty Dozen as many of us do remember the movie.  The 12 blogs I have listed and reviewed below show Alexa™ Traffic Ranking, Google™ Page Rank and Date Established as the key criteria for final rankings.  Using these criteria categorizes these baby boomer blogs as not necessarily The Best Baby Boomer Blogs but more accurately as The Most Popular Baby Boomer Blogs

Ranking Criteria: At the bottom of this post you will see the numerous articles we referred to in identifying the baby Boomer Blogs. We also used extensive broad and exact match searches on Google, Yahoo and Bing to gather a list of over 50 blogs and websites. Then we collected key ranking criteria such as Alexa ranking, Google Page Rank, Content via on site searches and archive reviews, Date Established and Backlinks.  Our final ranking was based upon what we felt was key:

  1. Alexa Page Rank – Final ranking based upon this public criteria with limited ambiguity. traffic is king, traffic does have a direct correlation to popularity. Used the more stable 3 month ranking – if we used the 30 day there would some changes in the rankings.
  2. Google Page Rank – (minimum 2 required) Although no clear criteria for this Google awards this based upon what they consider social proof and expertise.
  3. Date Established -  A minimum 12 months required as active website to show a consistent dedication to providing content to Baby Boomers.
  4. Baby Boomer Dedicated Content – A target level of 33% of the overall content of the website needed to be content targeted, tagged or categorized to Baby Boomers. Each site must have had a post in the last 30 days.
  5. Traffic Trend – Is the Blog growing it’s customer base and readership or not.

We did exclude blogs that were part of a corporate website or larger overall enterprise with a sub-domain or category devoted to Boomers such as the  The New Old Age.  We left off sites like BoomerAuthority being a forum/association type site. We know we may have missed or overlooked a few or even made an outright error. So we will review comments left on the article as well as maintain an updated ranking on a page here on our blog.  Check back here later for a link to that page.

We will look at the suggestions for our next update.  If we missed one – please let us know. We use two Firefox  browser add-ons to quickly view some of the criteria, such as current Google Page Rank and Alexa Traffic Rank.  If you have a suggestion we will gladly note the rankings in comments.  We will be publishing a page on the blog with a link here in the next few days that will show the results in a table – we will also list some of the other blogs we looked at that were not in the Alexa Top 12 Traffic Ranking.

  1. Thanks for these references Glen. It’s exactly what I was looking for. I’m taking some advice from Derek Halpern in targeting my ideal market and you’ve saved me some major time. Kudos!

  2. digital video says:

Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is fundamental and everything.
Nevertheless just imagine if you added some great images or video clips to give your posts more,
“pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and videos, this blog
could certainly be one of the greatest in its field.
    Amazing blog!

    • glenn says:

Hey thanks for the feedback. I do actually take a lot of time to include images in ALL my posts. With the keyword tagging I use I drive 100’s of visitors every day looking at my images and pictures in my posts! I have not used video in the same manner, but do use Youtube videos now and then if the topic is relevant.

Thanks for the list. I’m a boomer blogger myself and love to connect with others.

  5. What an entirely GREAT group of blogs. I’ve spent several hours laughing my way through some great posts, and feeling empathetic over others that covered topics from politics to medicine to grandkids. Thanks for the great list – if you are an online reader like me, most of these are very worthy of a subscription.

  6. Paul Douglas says:

I was a lead coordinator for a multi-millionaire dollar home improvement company in Michigan.

As you may know, home improvement companies are focused on the “age in place” principal. If your readers do not know what that means, well, basically it is to say “put money in your home, stay in your home and keep your home.”

Our customer base and demographic focus was 45-up which obviously included boomers.

Whenever one of our intrepid sales people left the prospects home in defeat, it was my job to call the customer and try to “get them back in the boat.”

Many clients talked about the loss of value of there homes and the fact that they plan to stay anyway, “what choice do they have?” After agreeing with them, I would typically end up asking them “What are some of things you would like to improve in the next 5 years?”

Here is where the conversation gets interesting. I would not get, “my batroom, my roof, my insulation, etc.” Almost all of our “demo-no-sale” clients mentioned they would like to travel away from their home. Perhaps a vacation to Europe, or a trip to South America, maybe even the far East. The lightbulb that went off in my brain eventually got brighter and brighter.

As the end of the year neared, and the seasons changed to cold, home improvement sales dropped significantly so, to combat the fact that we were not bringing in as much income, my wife and I started a travel agency. We operate on a shoe-string budget out of our home in Chelsea Michigan and enjoy each others company on a daily basis.

I am able to read boomer blogs, create some of my own and raise the kids hands-on now. I started an travel inform blog and have put some questions and answers to Wordpress.

I would like to formally introduce Bella Love Travels to your readers and want to offer our services and to your blog readers and give them 15% discount on our services. Users can book through our travel engines however, anyone that uses us specifically, as we ares personal customizable travel planners, the “vacationer” will receive the discount. (of course quotes are free)

All we need is a destination, (or idea where they want to go) number of travelers, days the would like to travel and budget. Our quote service is free, our vacation planning service 15% off. Vacation planning would include full itinerary, document service, informational demonstrations, etc.

Thank you for the opportunity to post. I really enjoyed reading the blogs. I was originally drawn to the “Dirty Dozen” top 12 boomer blogs and I will be returning to get more insight on the generation that “We love to serve” here at our home office.

God bless you all, from our family to yours.

I’ll be telling our baby boomer readers about the Top Baby Boomer Blogs of 2010 when Alan and I finally return home this week from our current adventure – a road trip through Northern Italy followed by a 21-day cruise on the Seabourn Sojourn.

Just a heads up, I’m not sure how you obtained the Google page rank information but we are a PR 4 according to the Google PageRank checker.

I can’t wait to visit all of the other baby boomer blogs on this list. Looks like I’m going to make some new boomer friends. Thanks again.

    • glenn says:

Hi Donna – Sounds Like another great trip! Congratulations to you and Alan for heading up the list! On the Google page rank – I did update it to 4 – which by the way is a high PR for a site as young as yours-Way To Go! Who knows why I had it at 3! I grab The PR off the Search Status Firefox Plug-in – so maybe it changed (Google tinkers with PR alot! Mine went from a 2 to 1 and then back to 2 all in September) Or maybe these ol’ boomer eyes didn’t quite see so clearly and I goofed! (The most probable reason!)

      Best wishes and great travels!

      • Donna Hull says:

Thanks, Glenn. We’re proud of what My Itchy Travel Feet has accomplished since our very first post on May 4, 2008.
